Description

Abbey Blu Gel (75gm – Pot)

Abbey Blu Gel is a cold blueing gel supplied in a 75g pot, used to touch up worn, scratched or rubbed areas on blued steel. Applied to clean, bare steel, it darkens the metal to give a blued finish that helps blend repairs into the surrounding surface and gives the steel some protection.

Abbey is a well-known UK supplier of gun-care products, and a pot of blueing gel is a handy thing to have in the workshop. Because it is a gel rather than a liquid, it stays where you put it, which makes it easier to control on small areas such as holster wear on a slide, a scratch on a barrel or the edges of a receiver.

How cold blueing works

Cold blueing products react chemically with the surface of steel to form a dark oxide layer. For that reaction to work, the steel must be completely clean and free from oil, grease and old finish in the area being treated. The result depends a great deal on preparation: a properly degreased surface takes the colour evenly, while any trace of oil will leave patches.

Blueing is intended for steel. It does not work in the same way on aluminium, zinc alloy, painted surfaces or plastics, and many airsoft replicas use alloy rather than steel for slides and receivers. Check what your part is made of, and test on a hidden area first if you are not sure.

Using the gel

Degrease the area thoroughly, apply a thin layer of gel with a clean applicator, leave it for the time given in the instructions, then wipe or rinse it off and dry the part. Several thin applications usually give a deeper, more even colour than one heavy coat. Once you are happy with the finish, give the metal a light coat of oil to protect it.

Key features

  • Cold blueing gel for steel parts
  • Gel consistency stays where it is applied
  • Ideal for touching up small worn or scratched areas
  • Helps blend repairs into an existing blued finish
  • Can be built up in several thin coats
  • 75g pot

Compatibility

For use on bare steel. Not suitable for aluminium, zinc alloy, painted or coated finishes, or plastic parts. If you are unsure what your part is made of, check with the manufacturer or test on an area that will not be seen.

Care and maintenance

Keep the lid tightly closed when not in use and store the pot upright, out of reach of children, away from heat and direct sunlight. Wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated area. After blueing, oil the treated area and keep it oiled, as a cold-blued finish benefits from regular light protection.

Who is it for?

Owners of steel-finished guns and replicas, collectors and hobbyists who want to tidy up worn or scratched blued finishes at home without sending parts away for refinishing.

Please note: Always read and follow the instructions and safety information on the pot before use.
