Description
Breakaway Relay Clips
Breakaway Relay Clips are neat plastic bait clips that fit onto the trace line. Their job is to hold the hook in place and stop it accidentally pulling out of the tubing, so your bait stays clipped down securely for the cast. They come 10 per packet.
The relay clip dates from the early development of modern cascade rigs and is still used in large numbers by rig makers. It is a simple, versatile component that can be used as an intermediate bait clip on a multi-hook rig, or as part of a relay system where an impact shield or the lead acts as the main release.
How they are used
On a clipped-down rig, the relay clip sits on the trace and holds the hook so the bait is streamlined against the rig body during the cast. When the main release lets go on impact, the relay clips release in turn, so all of the baits fall free to fish on the seabed.
For cascade rigs, rig makers often trim the gripping spigot and fix the clip to the trace line with crimps or sliding stop knots. They are also used on up-and-over rigs.
Why clip down
Clipping baits down gives a more streamlined rig, adding casting distance and protecting soft baits from being torn off during a powerful cast.
