Description
B983 Specialist Hook – Size 14
The B983 Specialist Hook in size 14 is a light gauge hook that is still incredibly strong, made for specialist big fish angling. It belongs to Kamasan’s well-known B983 wide gape specialist pattern, a hook that is widely used by carp, tench, barbel and bream anglers, as well as by match anglers who need a strong hook in smaller sizes.
The combination of fine wire and strength is what sets this pattern apart. A lighter wire hook penetrates easily and lets small and buoyant baits behave more naturally, while the strength of the hook means you can still put pressure on a big fish when you need to keep it out of snags or weed.
Design and construction
The B983 is made from fine high carbon wire and features a wide gape, which leaves plenty of room between the point and the shank for the hook to catch hold, even with a bait mounted on a hair. It has an angled eye and a curved, chemically sharpened needle point, so it is very sharp straight from the packet, and it is barbed for a secure hold.
The wide gape and angled eye work particularly well with bottom baits and with buoyant baits such as pop-ups, helping the hook turn and catch hold in the fish’s mouth.
Choosing size 14
Size 14 is a neat, smaller hook for finer presentations. It suits single pellets, maggots, casters and a single grain of corn, and comes into its own on pressured or commercial waters where bites are harder to come by, without giving up the strength needed for a big fish.
Rigging
The eyed pattern can be tied with a knotless knot to create a hair rig, which is the most common way of presenting boilies, pellets and other hard baits. It can also be used with a palomar or similar knot for direct-hooked baits. Moisten knots before tightening them and test each one with a firm pull before casting.

Compatibility
The B983 suits hair rigs and direct-hooked baits with monofilament, fluorocarbon and braided hooklinks. Match the hook size to your bait and target species, and choose a hooklink and main line that are balanced with the fish you expect. Always check your fishery’s rules, as some venues insist on barbless hooks.
Care and maintenance
Keep hooks in their packet or a dry, sealed rig box, as moisture can cause rust and dull the point. Check the point after every fish or snag by drawing it lightly across your thumbnail; if it slides rather than catching, change the hook. Never reuse a hook that has opened out or is damaged, and dispose of old hooks safely.
Who is it for?
These hooks are for carp, tench, barbel, bream and specimen anglers, and match anglers who need a fine but strong size 14 hook for single pellets, maggots, casters and single grains of corn.
