Description
Bombarda Float 20g
A Bombarda, also known as a Sbirolino, is a weighted casting float. This 20g version is designed for fishing baits on the surface, and its weight is what gives you casting distance. That is the main reason anglers use one: a small fly, light lure or floating bait has almost no weight of its own, but with a Bombarda on the line you can cast it a long way and fish areas you could not otherwise reach.
Bombardas are popular for trout on lakes and ponds and are also used for species such as garfish in the sea. A 20g model is a good all-round weight, heavy enough for a good cast with a suitable spinning rod while still being manageable on medium tackle.
How it is rigged
The main line is threaded through the float, and the end of the main line is tied to a swivel. A long trace, often between one and two metres, is tied to the other side of the swivel and carries your fly, lure or bait. A bead between the float and the swivel helps protect the knot. The long trace keeps the bait well away from the float, so fish are less likely to be put off.
How to fish it
Cast out, then retrieve slowly and steadily. With a surface float like this one, the bait fishes on or close to the top as you wind in, giving a natural presentation. Vary the speed of the retrieve and add short pauses to see what the fish prefer. Bites are usually felt as a pull on the line or seen as a swirl at the surface.
Key features
- 20g Bombarda (Sbirolino) casting float
- Designed for fishing baits on the surface
- Weight aids long casting
- Presents light baits, flies and small lures at range
- Natural presentation on a long trace
- Suits trout lakes and light sea fishing
Compatibility
Use with a spinning rod rated to cast 20g or more, plus a swivel, bead and a long trace to your fly, lure or bait. Check your rod’s casting weight before use, and check the rules of your fishery, as some trout waters restrict float-and-fly methods.
Care and maintenance
Rinse the float in fresh water after use in the sea and let it dry before storing. Check the line channel for nicks or rough edges that could damage your line, and store it where it will not be crushed.
Who is it for?
Anglers who want to present flies, light lures or floating baits at long range, particularly trout anglers on stillwaters and sea anglers targeting surface-feeding fish.
