Description
WSB Pro Mono 5lb
WSB Pro Mono 5lb is a nylon monofilament fishing line with a 5lb breaking strain, part of WSB’s Pro Mono range. At 5lb it is a light, versatile line well suited to float and light feeder fishing for silverfish and smaller species.
Monofilament remains the most popular all-round fishing line because it is easy to handle, forgiving and good value. It is simple to spool, casts smoothly off a fixed spool reel and ties dependable knots, which makes it a sensible choice for beginners and experienced anglers alike.
Where 5lb line fits
A 5lb main line suits waggler and stick float fishing on lakes, canals and rivers, and lighter feeder or bomb fishing at short to medium range. It casts light floats and small feeders well and gives a more delicate presentation than heavier lines, which often means more bites, yet it still has a sensible margin of strength if a bonus tench or bream comes along. Use a lighter hooklength, such as 2lb to 4lb, beneath it.
Why monofilament
Mono has a degree of natural stretch. That stretch acts as a shock absorber when you strike and when a fish makes a sudden lunge close to the net, which reduces hook pulls and breakages, especially on lighter tackle. It also sinks steadily and lies naturally on the bottom when ledgering, and it is easy to see what is happening with your rig. Because nylon is supple, it sits well on the spool and comes off cleanly during the cast, which helps with both distance and accuracy.
Key features
- 5lb breaking strain
- Nylon monofilament
- Natural stretch cushions the strike and the fight
- Supple and easy to cast
- Ties strong, reliable knots
- Light line for float and light feeder work
- Delicate presentation for silverfish
Compatibility
Ideal for small fixed spool reels on float rods, light feeder rods and quiver tips. Check your reel’s spool capacity to see how much line you need.
As a rule of thumb, choose a hooklength a little lighter than your main line, so that if you do get snagged the break happens at the hooklength and you do not lose your float or feeder.
Care and maintenance
Nylon monofilament is tough, but heat and sunlight are its main enemies. Store spare spools in a cool, dark place, and avoid leaving loaded reels on a car dashboard or in a hot shed. At the start of every session, run the last few metres through your fingers and cut back any section that feels rough, flattened or kinked.
Always moisten knots with water before pulling them tight, as friction heat can weaken the line at the knot. Retie after landing a big fish or pulling free from a snag. If you fish in the sea, rinse your reel and spool in fresh water afterwards and let it dry naturally. Take old line home and cut it into short lengths before binning it, so it cannot trap birds or wildlife.
Who is it for?
For pleasure and match anglers targeting roach, rudd, perch, skimmers and other silverfish on the float or light feeder, and a good line for juniors learning to float fish.
