Airsoft BBs Explained: Weights, Bio BBs and Choosing the Right Ammo

· edl

Choosing the right BB makes a bigger difference to range, accuracy and reliability than most new players expect. This guide explains BB weights, biodegradable BBs and how to choose a BB for your replica.

Size: 6mm is the standard

Almost all modern airsoft replicas use 6mm BBs. A few older or specialist replicas use 8mm. Check your replica’s details if you are unsure.

Weight: what the numbers mean

BB weight is measured in grams. Heavier BBs leave the barrel more slowly, but they carry their energy further, are less affected by wind, and generally fly straighter once the hop-up is set to suit them.

WeightTypically used in
0.12gLow-cost spring pistols and toys. Too light for most skirmish replicas.
0.20gEntry-level AEGs and many gas pistols. Also the standard weight sites use to measure FPS.
0.25gA popular all-round choice for most AEGs and gas replicas, with better stability than 0.20g.
0.28g–0.30gUpgraded AEGs, DMRs and HPA setups that can lift a heavier BB.
0.32g and heavierBolt-action sniper rifles and tuned long-range setups.

These are guidelines, not rules. The best weight is the heaviest BB your replica can lift with a flat, straight flight once the hop-up is adjusted.

Hop-up: why weight and hop go together

The hop-up puts backspin on the BB so that it lifts and flies further. If you change BB weight, re-adjust your hop:

  • BBs rising sharply or curling upwards: too much hop, or the BB is too light.
  • BBs dropping early: too little hop, or the BB is too heavy for your replica.

Adjust a little at a time and test at the distance you usually play at. Worn hop rubbers can also cause poor flight; see hop rubbers.

Biodegradable (bio) BBs

Many outdoor sites, especially woodland sites, require biodegradable BBs. These are made from materials designed to break down over time instead of staying in the ground for years. Some sites only allow BBs bought on site. Always check your site’s rules before you go.

Browse bio BBs and regular BBs.

Quality matters

  • Good BBs are smooth, round and consistent in size and weight. Cheap BBs with seams or air bubbles fly unpredictably and can jam or damage your inner barrel and hop-up.
  • Never reuse BBs picked up from the ground. Dirt and damage can harm your replica.
  • Keep BBs dry and sealed. Bio BBs can absorb moisture and swell if stored badly.
  • Tracer BBs glow when charged by a tracer unit, which is fun for night and indoor games.

FPS, joules and BB weight

Sites limit power either in FPS measured with a 0.20g BB, or in joules. Joules are the more accurate measure because they account for BB weight: the same replica will show a lower FPS with a heavier BB, but its energy stays about the same. As a guide, 350 FPS with a 0.20g BB is about 1.14 joules. Your site will test you on the day, so do not try to work around their limits.

Quick recommendations

  • Stock AEG, first season: 0.25g bio BBs are a sensible starting point at most woodland sites.
  • Gas pistol: 0.20g or 0.25g, depending on the model and the weather.
  • Sniper rifle or upgraded DMR: 0.30g and heavier.
  • Indoor or CQB: check the site rules; lighter BBs and lower power limits are common.
