Description
Tanaka Arisaka Rifle Type 99 (Version 2 – Steel Finish – Gas Powered)
The Tanaka Arisaka Type 99 is a gas-powered bolt-action replica of the Type 99 Arisaka, the standard Japanese infantry rifle of the Second World War. This is Tanaka’s Version 2, with a steel finish.
Tanaka Works is a Japanese maker with a long-standing reputation for detailed, historically accurate replicas, including its well-known Kar98k and Type 97 rifles. Its bolt-action rifles are prized by collectors and reenactors, and the Type 99 is a natural choice for anyone building a Pacific theatre impression or collecting military rifles of the period.
A piece of history
The Type 99 was introduced in 1939 to replace the earlier Type 38, and it served throughout the Second World War. It is a long, elegant bolt-action rifle, and owning a faithful replica is a great way to bring a historical impression to life or to enjoy the mechanics of a classic military design.
The steel finish on this version gives it an authentic, period-correct appearance.
Bolt-action and gas power
As a bolt-action replica, every shot is deliberate: work the bolt, aim and fire. Being gas-powered, it does not need a heavy spring to be compressed by the bolt, which keeps the bolt action smooth. Tanaka uses a similar internal design across its bolt-action rifles, such as its Kar98k.
A bolt-action rifle like this suits historical games and reenactment events, where realism and a measured pace of play are part of the experience.
Getting started
Read the manual carefully before use, as it explains how to fill the rifle with gas, how it is loaded and how the hop-up is set. Fill only with the gas Tanaka recommends, in short bursts, and test-fire at a safe target before your first game.
Have the rifle chronographed at your site before play, and check whether your event has particular rules for bolt-action rifles.

Care and maintenance
Keep the gas system’s seals supple with a drop of silicone oil on the fill valve every so often, and avoid overfilling. Store the rifle with a little gas in it if the manual recommends doing so, and let it come to room temperature before use in cold weather.
Wipe the metal parts with a soft, lightly oiled cloth after use, clean the stock with a dry cloth, keep the rifle dry, and store it somewhere stable, ideally in a case, especially if you are keeping it as a collector’s piece.
