Description
CSI S.T.A.R. XR-5 FG-1502 Advanced Battle Rifle (AEG – 0.50J – Grey)
The CSI S.T.A.R. XR-5 is a futuristic, modular Advanced Battle Rifle with a look all of its own, and this FG-1502 version comes in grey. As named, it is a 0.50 joule version, a lower-power set-up that makes it a natural fit for close-quarters and indoor sites where engagement distances are short.
Behind the angular, science-fiction styling, CSI S.T.A.R. built the XR-5 around a light injection-moulded polymer body and a standard Version 2 gearbox, so it pairs a striking appearance with internals that any airsoft technician will recognise. It also takes standard M4 AEG magazines, which makes it easy to run alongside an existing M4 and keeps spares cheap and easy to find. The grey finish suits urban loadouts and gives the rifle a clean, modern look that sets it apart from a field of black M4s.
Design and build
Our other XR-5 listings describe an injection-moulded polymer construction, a Picatinny rail for optics and accessories, flip-up front and rear sights and a 14mm counter-clockwise threaded outer barrel. The polymer body keeps the rifle light, which is welcome on a long day of CQB where you hold the rifle up for long periods.
The XR-5 is designed as a modular platform. CSI makes a range of parts for it, including colour body kits, an ergonomic handguard, head caps and a replacement upper part, several of which we list separately, so you can change the look of the rifle over time without changing its internals.
Performance and internals
Inside is a standard Version 2 gearbox with an adjustable hop-up and semi and full-auto fire, as listed on our other XR-5 versions. Version 2 is the most widely used AEG gearbox layout, so springs, gears, pistons and other service parts are easy to source if the rifle ever needs attention.
The battery sits under the handguard with front wiring, which keeps the stock area clean. Battery space under a handguard is always limited, so check the size and connector of any pack against the space available before you buy one.
The 0.50 joule rating in the product name means this version is set up for lower-power play. That suits indoor arenas, urban sites and CQB days where sites set lower limits for full-auto rifles. Always check your site rules and have the rifle chronographed before play.
On the field
Short, light and quick to point, the XR-5 is at its best moving through buildings and tight corridors. Use the Picatinny rail for a compact red dot, and keep 0.20g or 0.25g seamless BBs in the magazine for a good balance of speed and stability at indoor distances. Add hop a little at a time until shots fly flat, and note the setting once you are happy with it.

Compatibility
The XR-5 takes standard M4 AEG magazines from most makers, and we also list the CSI XR-5 FG-1503 magazine. Test any new spare before game day, as fit varies slightly between brands. The Version 2 gearbox accepts standard V2 parts, but it is worth checking with us before buying upgrades so that wiring and spring choices suit a lower-power rifle.
The rail takes standard 20mm optics and accessories, and the 14mm counter-clockwise thread suits most mock suppressors and tracer units. CSI XR-5 body kits, handguards, head caps and the upper part are listed separately; check that each part suits the FG-1502 before ordering. Seamless 0.20g BBs suit a lower-power rifle well.
Care and maintenance
Take the battery out after every game and store it separately at a sensible storage charge, rather than leaving it connected inside the replica. Charge LiPo batteries with a proper balance charger, keep them in a LiPo-safe bag and never leave them charging unattended; NiMH packs should be charged with a smart charger that stops when the pack is full.
Run a cleaning rod with a lightly dampened patch through the inner barrel from time to time to clear dirt and residue, which keeps the hop-up consistent. Use good-quality seamless BBs, never reuse BBs that have been on the ground, and wipe the outside over after damp or muddy games. Leave gearbox work, shimming and spring changes to a competent technician.
Who is it for?
The XR-5 in grey is for players who want a rifle that stands out, for CQB and indoor players looking for a light, lower-power AEG, and for anyone who likes to change the look of their kit while keeping simple, familiar internals.
Please note: A battery, charger and BBs are not listed as included. Always wear suitable eye protection, and full-face protection where your site requires it, when using or testing any airsoft replica.
