Description
CSI S.T.A.R. XR-5 FG-1502 Advanced Battle Rifle (AEG – Grey)
The CSI S.T.A.R. XR-5 is a futuristic, modular Advanced Battle Rifle with a look all of its own, and this FG-1502 version comes in grey. Behind the angular, science-fiction styling, the XR-5 is built around a light injection-moulded polymer body and a Version 2 gearbox, so it pairs a striking appearance with internals any airsoft technician will recognise.
It also takes standard M4 AEG magazines, which makes it easy to run alongside an existing M4 and keeps spares cheap and easy to find. The grey finish gives it a modern, urban look that stands apart from the usual black. It suits players who want something that stands out from the usual M4s and AKs, and anyone who likes to customise the look of their rifle over time.
Design and build
Retailer listings describe an injection-moulded polymer body, flip-up front and rear sights, a Picatinny top rail with further rail space for accessories, an adjustable stock and a 14mm counter-clockwise threaded outer barrel. The polymer body keeps the rifle light, which is welcome on a long day of play.
The XR-5 is designed as a modular platform. CSI makes parts for it, including colour body kits, handguards and a replacement upper part, several of which we list separately, so you can change the look of the rifle over time without changing its internals.
Performance and internals
Inside is a Version 2 gearbox with an adjustable hop-up and safe, semi and full-auto fire. Version 2 is the most widely used AEG gearbox layout, so springs, gears, pistons and other service parts are easy to source. A UK retailer listing for the grey version describes a full metal Version 2 gearbox with a long-type motor, a 363mm inner barrel, a 225-round high-capacity magazine and an adjustable length of about 790 to 870mm.
The battery sits under the handguard with front wiring and a small Tamiya connector. Battery space under a handguard is always limited, so check the size and connector of any pack against the space before you buy one. We also list 0.50 joule versions of the XR-5 for lower-power sites; this listing is the standard FG-1502.

Compatibility
The XR-5 takes standard M4 AEG magazines; fit varies a little between brands, so test a spare before buying several. The Picatinny rail takes standard 20mm optics and accessories, and the outer barrel takes 14mm CCW muzzle devices.
CSI’s XR-5 body kits, handguards and upper parts are made for this rifle. Standard Version 2 gearbox parts fit the gearbox, but check with us before ordering internal upgrades.
Care and maintenance
Take the battery out after every game and store it separately at a sensible storage charge, rather than leaving it connected inside the replica. Charge LiPo batteries with a proper balance charger, keep them in a LiPo-safe bag and never leave them charging unattended; NiMH packs should be charged with a smart charger that stops when the pack is full.
Run a cleaning rod with a lightly dampened patch through the inner barrel from time to time to clear dirt and residue, which keeps the hop-up consistent. Use good-quality seamless BBs, never reuse BBs that have been on the ground, and wipe the outside over after damp or muddy games. Leave gearbox work, shimming and spring changes to a competent technician.
Polymer bodies are tough but can be marked by solvents, so clean the outside with a damp cloth only and avoid harsh cleaning products.
Who is it for?
The XR-5 is for players who want a distinctive, light rifle with familiar M4 magazine compatibility and simple Version 2 internals, and for anyone who enjoys customising the look of their kit. Grey suits urban loadouts and players who want a rifle that looks different from the crowd.
Please note: A battery, charger and BBs are not listed as included. Always wear suitable eye protection, and full-face protection where your site requires it, when using or testing any airsoft replica.
