Description
CSI S.T.A.R. XR-5 FG-1502 Advanced Battle Rifle (AEG – OD)
The CSI S.T.A.R. XR-5 is a futuristic, modular Advanced Battle Rifle with a look all of its own, and this FG-1502 version comes in OD (olive drab). Behind the angular, science-fiction styling, CSI S.T.A.R. built the XR-5 around a light injection-moulded polymer body and a standard Version 2 gearbox, so it pairs a striking appearance with internals that any airsoft technician will recognise.
It also takes standard M4 AEG magazines, which makes it easy to run alongside an existing M4 and keeps spares cheap and easy to find. The olive drab finish gives this futuristic rifle a more military look that suits woodland and green-toned loadouts. It suits players who want something that stands out from the usual M4s and AKs, and anyone who likes to customise the look of their rifle over time.
Design and build
Our XR-5 listings describe an injection-moulded polymer construction, a Picatinny rail for optics and accessories, flip-up front and rear sights and a 14mm counter-clockwise threaded outer barrel. The polymer body keeps the rifle light, which is welcome on a long day where you hold the rifle up for long periods.
The XR-5 is designed as a modular platform. CSI makes a range of parts for it, including colour body kits, an ergonomic handguard, head caps and a replacement upper part, several of which we list separately, so you can change the look of the rifle over time without changing its internals.
Performance and internals
Inside is a standard Version 2 gearbox with an adjustable hop-up and semi and full-auto fire, as listed on our other XR-5 versions. Version 2 is the most widely used AEG gearbox layout, so springs, gears, pistons and other service parts are easy to source if the rifle ever needs attention.
The battery sits under the handguard with front wiring, which keeps the stock area clean. Battery space under a handguard is always limited, so check the size and connector of any pack against the space available before you buy one. We also list 0.50 joule versions of the XR-5 for lower-power sites; this listing is the standard FG-1502 in OD (olive drab).
On the field
Short, light and quick to point, the XR-5 is at home moving through buildings and woodland alike. Use the Picatinny rail for a red dot or low-power optic, and keep 0.20g or 0.25g seamless BBs in the magazine for a good balance of speed and stability. Add hop a little at a time until shots fly flat, note the setting once you are happy, and have the rifle chronographed at your site before play.

Compatibility
The XR-5 takes standard M4 AEG magazines; fit varies a little between brands, so test a spare before buying several. The Picatinny rail takes standard 20mm optics and accessories, and the outer barrel takes 14mm CCW muzzle devices.
CSI’s XR-5 body kits, handguards, head caps and upper parts are made for this rifle. Standard Version 2 gearbox parts fit the gearbox, but check with us before ordering internal upgrades.
Care and maintenance
Take the battery out after every game and store it separately at a sensible storage charge, rather than leaving it connected inside the replica. Charge LiPo batteries with a proper balance charger, keep them in a LiPo-safe bag and never leave them charging unattended; NiMH packs should be charged with a smart charger that stops when the pack is full.
Run a cleaning rod with a lightly dampened patch through the inner barrel from time to time to clear dirt and residue, which keeps the hop-up consistent. Use good-quality seamless BBs, never reuse BBs that have been on the ground, and wipe the outside over after damp or muddy games. Leave gearbox work, shimming and spring changes to a competent technician.
Polymer bodies are tough but can be marked by solvents, so clean the outside with a damp cloth only and avoid harsh cleaning products.
Who is it for?
The XR-5 is for players who want a distinctive, light rifle with familiar M4 magazine compatibility and simple Version 2 internals, and for anyone who enjoys customising the look of their kit. The OD finish suits woodland loadouts.
Please note: A battery, charger and BBs are not listed as included. Always wear suitable eye protection, and full-face protection where your site requires it, when using or testing any airsoft replica.
