This is the officially licensed Taran Tactical Innovations JW3 Combat Master, made by Armorer Works for EMG, in the Island Recon configuration with a full metal build and a black finish (code TT-CM0200). The Combat Master is the competition-style pistol made famous on screen in the John Wick films, and this replica captures its compensated slide, island barrel and race-gun lines.

It is a gas blowback pistol, so the slide cycles with every shot for a satisfying kick and realistic handling. Build and finish

The pistol is full metal, with a CNC-machined aluminium slide and frame per our listing of the same model. The Island Recon slide has the open top and compensated front end that give the Combat Master its look, and the black finish gives it a purposeful, understated appearance. The weight and solidity of the metal construction make it feel planted and steady in the hand.

How it works

When you pull the trigger, gas from the magazine sends the BB down the barrel and drives the slide back, cocking the hammer and chambering the next round. That moving slide makes reloads, malfunction drills and transitions feel close to the real thing. Like all gas pistols, performance drops as the magazine cools, so on cold days keep spare magazines in an inside pocket and pause between strings of shots.

An adjustable hop-up lets you tune the backspin on the BB for flatter flight with your chosen BB weight, and the 30-round magazine (per our listing of the same model) gives a useful capacity for skirmishing.

Handling

Compatibility

The Combat Master is built on the 2011 / Hi-Capa style platform, so it uses 2011-pattern gas magazines; buy spares made for this model or confirmed as compatible with it. It runs on green gas, red gas or propane with a suitable adaptor and silicone oil, per our listing of the same model.

Its compensated, island-barrel front end means it needs a holster made for this model, or an open-fronted race or universal holster. Check holster fit before buying.

Care and maintenance

Put a drop of silicone oil on the magazine’s fill valve and seals every few fills, and store magazines with a little gas in them so the seals stay seated. Do not overfill, and in cold weather let magazines warm up to room temperature rather than heating them.

Wipe the moving parts and outer barrel with a thin film of silicone oil now and then, clean the inner barrel with a rod and patch, and use good quality seamless BBs. Never use petroleum-based oils on the seals, and keep the pistol and magazines away from heat and direct sunlight.
