Description
Fish Priest
A priest is a small, weighted club used to dispatch fish quickly and humanely when you intend to keep them for the table. This deluxe version has a wooden handle, a brass end that puts the weight where it is needed, and a lanyard so it stays attached to you rather than getting lost on the bank or in the boat.
Many game and sea anglers regard a priest as an essential piece of kit, and some trout fisheries require anglers to carry one. If you keep fish to eat, it is important to do so responsibly, and a firm blow with a proper priest is the quickest and kindest method.
How to use it
Hold the fish firmly on a flat surface or in a wet cloth or landing net, with its head facing away from you. Deliver one or two sharp, firm blows to the top of the head, just behind the eyes. A weighted priest makes this quick and decisive. Then keep the fish cool, ideally in a cool bag, until you get home.
Build and materials
The wooden handle gives a warm, comfortable grip that is easy to hold even with wet or cold hands. The brass end adds weight at the striking end, so you need less effort for an effective blow. The lanyard can be looped over your wrist while in use, or used to hang the priest from your belt, waistcoat or bag.

Care and maintenance
Rinse the priest in fresh water after use, especially after sea fishing, and dry it thoroughly. Wipe the wooden handle dry rather than leaving it soaking, and occasionally treat it with a little wood oil to keep it in good condition. A quick polish will keep the brass end looking its best.
