Description
French Booms – 10 Inch
French booms are a long-established piece of sea fishing tackle used to present a bait away from your mainline. These are made from stainless steel and measure 254mm (10 inches), a length that holds your hooklength well clear of the main line and of walls and structure.
They are especially popular for pier, harbour wall and jetty fishing, where a bait hanging straight down next to the wall can tangle or get lost among weed and mussels. A French boom lets your bait drift naturally a short distance away, where it is easier for fish to find and less likely to snag.
How it works
A French boom is a length of wire with a coil or clip arrangement that attaches to your mainline, and an eye at the end for your hooklength. A common way to use them is to fish your lead first, then clip the boom onto the mainline and let it slide down the line to the lead, carrying the baited hooklength with it. This means you can fish a live or dead bait at the bottom without having to cast it, and you can send additional baits down without reeling in.
Using it on the pier
Lower or cast your lead, tighten up, then attach the boom and hooklength and let it run down the line. The boom will sit near the lead and hold the bait out from the wall. It works well for mackerel strips, small live baits and worm baits for species such as pollack, bass, garfish and flatfish, depending on where and when you fish.
Key features
- Stainless steel for corrosion resistance
- 254mm (10 inch) length
- Holds baits clear of the mainline and walls
- Can be sent down an already-cast line
- Simple and quick to use
- Ideal for pier, harbour and jetty fishing
Compatibility
Works with standard sea fishing mainlines and leads. Use a hooklength and hook suited to your target species and bait. Choose a lead heavy enough to hold bottom in the tide, as the boom relies on a tight line to slide down and stay in place.
Care and maintenance
Although stainless steel resists corrosion, rinse booms in fresh water after each trip to remove salt and sand, and dry them before storage. Check for kinks or bent wire, and straighten or replace any that are damaged, as a bent boom will not run smoothly down the line. Store them in a box or wallet to stop them tangling with other tackle.
Who is it for?
