Description
Mackerel Feathers – 12 Hooks, Size 1/0, Coloured
This ready-tied mackerel feather rig carries twelve coloured feathers on size 1/0 hooks. When a big shoal of mackerel is under the boat, a long rig like this can catch several fish on a single drop, making it a popular choice for gathering fresh bait or a few fish for the table.
Because of its length, a twelve-hook rig is best suited to boat fishing, where you can simply lower it over the side rather than casting. It can be used from high piers and harbour walls with care, but is awkward to cast and land fish on from a beach.
How to fish them
Tie the top swivel to your mainline and clip a suitable lead to the bottom swivel. From a boat, lower the rig to the bottom, then jig it back up through the water with steady lifts and drops of the rod tip, winding in a little line each time. Mackerel can be at any depth, so work the whole water column until you find them. When you feel fish, pause for a moment to give others a chance to hook up before winding in.
Handling a long rig
With up to twelve hooks in play, take your time when bringing fish aboard. Swing the rig into the boat carefully, keep it under control and unhook fish one at a time. Having a bucket or fish box ready and a clear deck makes the job much easier and safer.

Compatibility

Care and maintenance
Rinse in fresh water after use and dry before storing to reduce rust. Wind the rig onto a winder to keep the snoods from tangling. Replace any damaged snoods or blunt hooks, and dispose of old rigs carefully.
