Description
Mackerel Feathers – 6 Hooks, Size 1/0, Coloured
This ready-tied mackerel feather rig carries six coloured feathers on size 1/0 hooks. Six hooks is the traditional choice for mackerel fishing: it gives you a good chance of several fish on one drop when a shoal is about, while still being short enough to cast comfortably from a pier or beach and easy to manage when unhooking.
Bright, coloured feathers catch the light and draw the attention of fast-moving shoal fish. They are a staple for summer mackerel and will also take garfish, scad, pollack and other small predators.
How to fish them
Tie the top swivel to your mainline and clip a lead to the bottom swivel. Cast out and let the rig sink, then retrieve with a lift-and-drop action: lift the rod smoothly, then lower it while winding in the slack line. Vary your depth on each cast until you find the fish, then keep fishing at that depth. From a boat you can simply drop the rig to the bottom and jig it up through the water.
Coloured or white?
Fish can be surprisingly selective, and what works one day may not the next. Coloured feathers stand out in coloured water and low light, while white feathers give a more natural baitfish look in clear conditions. Carrying both lets you change if the bites dry up.
Key features
- 6 coloured feathers
- Size 1/0 hooks
- Bright colours to attract shoal fish
- Ready-tied with swivels, just add a lead
- Classic six-hook mackerel rig
- Suits shore, pier and boat fishing
Compatibility
Use with a beach caster, spinning rod or boat rod rated for the lead you need. A fixed-spool or multiplier reel with strong mono or braid is ideal. Choose a lead that gets the rig down to the fish while staying within your rod’s casting weight.
Care and maintenance
Rinse the rig in fresh water after use and let it dry before storing it, to slow down rust on the hooks and swivels. Wind it onto a rig winder or keep it in its packet to avoid tangles. Replace the rig when hooks become blunt or rusty, and take care with multiple loose hooks around other people and pets.
Who is it for?
Anyone heading out for summer mackerel from the shore or a boat, from first-timers to experienced sea anglers who want a dependable ready-made rig.
