The Mad Max Contender is a gas-powered airsoft pistol inspired by the Thompson/Center Contender, the famous single-shot, break-action pistol originally designed for hunting and long-range target shooting. Rather than a magazine-fed semi-automatic, the Contender opens at a hinge in front of the frame, just like a break-barrel shotgun, so you load and fire one shot at a time. This version is finished in black.
That slower, more considered way of shooting is exactly what makes the Contender appealing. Every shot counts, so you concentrate on your stance, sight picture and trigger control. It is a refreshing change from high-capacity pistols and a striking piece to own, whether you shoot it at targets in the garden or keep it as part of a collection of unusual replicas.
How it works
To load, you open the action at the hinge, load the round, then close the action until it locks. The pistol is gas powered, so each shot is driven by a measured release of gas rather than a spring you have to cock by hand. Because there is no slide cycling or reciprocating bolt, the gas is used only to fire the BB, and the shooting experience is calm and quiet compared with a blowback pistol. After each shot you open the action again to reload.
Handling and ergonomics
The Contender’s long barrel and pistol grip give it a distinctive profile and a long sight radius, which helps with careful aiming. Most shooters find it most comfortable and accurate in a two-handed hold, taking their time over each shot. Compatibility
Use only gas made specifically for airsoft replicas; never use lighter fluid or other butane products. Good quality 6mm BBs give the best accuracy. If you want to buy spares or accessories for this pistol, please ask us first, as parts for Contender-style replicas are model-specific.
Care and maintenance
Lubricate the gas fill valve with a drop of silicone oil from time to time to keep the seals supple. Do not overfill, and store the pistol with a small amount of gas in it rather than completely empty, which helps keep the seals seated. Keep the hinge and locking surfaces clean and lightly oiled with silicone oil so the action opens and closes smoothly. Gas performs best in mild temperatures, so on cold days keep the pistol somewhere warm between strings of shots. Clean the barrel occasionally with a rod and dry patch.
