Description
Saigo Defense Kenji AEG (Short – Black)
The Saigo Defense Kenji (Short) is the compact, PDW-length version of Saigo Defense’s M4-style electric rifle, finished in black. It pairs a light polymer body with a metal V2 gearbox, a full-length KeyMod handguard and a metal suppressor, giving a modern, purposeful look in a short package that is easy to move with indoors and around buildings.
The Kenji is offered as a short PDW and as a longer carbine; this short model has a 290mm inner barrel, which keeps it nimble for close-quarter games while the rotary hop-up and 65-degree hop rubber help it make good use of heavier BBs. It is a strong choice for players stepping up from an entry-level rifle who want useful features without a big price.
Build and materials
The receiver, stock and pistol grip are polymer, which keeps the weight manageable, while the outer barrel, suppressor, buffer tube and the internal components and controls are metal. The full-length KeyMod handguard carries a full-length 20mm top rail, and extra rail sections are provided so you can fit a grip, torch or laser where you want them.
Flip-up iron sights let you aim straight out of the box and fold away if you add a red dot or scope. The textured pistol grip and six-position stock let you set the rifle up to suit your build and the kit you are wearing. The black finish is a timeless choice that works with any loadout.
Performance and internals
Inside is a metal Version 2 gearbox, rear wired, with steel gears, an aluminium vented cylinder and a metal piston, driven by a 16,000 RPM motor. The rate of fire is described as around 18 rounds per second. A quick-change spring system lets a technician change the spring without stripping the gearbox, which is handy if you need to tune the rifle to a site’s limits.
The rotary hop-up unit is fitted with a 65-degree hop rubber, a harder compound intended to handle heavier BBs. The rifle fires on safe, semi and full auto, and the metal suppressor sits on a 14mm counter-clockwise threaded outer barrel, so it can be swapped for a different suppressor or a tracer unit.
Getting started
Fully charge a suitable battery before first use, then fit it as described in the manual and connect it carefully. Load a magazine, wind it if it is a high-capacity type, and start with the hop-up turned off. Fire a few shots at a safe target and add hop a little at a time until the BBs fly flat without rising at the end of their flight.
Have the rifle chronographed at your site before you play, and keep a note of the hop setting that suits your favourite BB weight so you can return to it quickly.

Compatibility
The Kenji takes Tokyo Marui and compatible M4 AEG magazines, so spares are easy to find in low, mid and high-capacity styles. The battery sits in the buffer tube: an 11.1V LiPo in a buffer tube size is recommended, and the rifle uses a mini Tamiya connector, so check both before buying a pack.
The KeyMod handguard accepts KeyMod accessories and rail sections, the top rail takes standard 20mm optics and mounts, and the 14mm counter-clockwise thread suits most airsoft suppressors and tracer units. Version 2 gearbox parts are widely available if you decide to upgrade later.
Care and maintenance
Take the battery out after every game and store it away from the rifle, and charge LiPo batteries only on a proper balance charger under supervision. Clean the inner barrel with a cleaning rod and a dry cloth patch every few games, as dirt and broken BB fragments are the main causes of flyers. Stick to good quality seamless BBs of a consistent weight.
Check screws, the flash hider and any mounts before each game day, and store the rifle somewhere dry. Leave the hop-up at a light setting in storage, and if the rifle has an electronic trigger unit, a fully charged battery helps it read the trigger cleanly.
Who is it for?
The Kenji short suits players who want an affordable M4-style rifle with sensible features such as a metal gearbox, KeyMod rail and rotary hop-up, and especially anyone who plays a lot of CQB and indoor games where a compact rifle is easier to manage.
